Thursday, May 22- Sunday, June 1: 

  • During Shakespeare Free-for-All, the Shakespeare Theatre Company offers a week of free performances of “Hamlet” at the Carter Barron Amphitheatre. (No show on Monday, May 26).

Friday, May 23:

  • The National Museum of Crime & Punishment opens, allowing visitors to explore the investigative techniques used by law enforcement and government agencies to solve crimes.

Sunday, May 25: 

  • The 21st annual Rolling Thunder bike rally pays homage to the nation's veterans, particularly those still missing in action or prisoners of war.
  • From noon - 3 pm, the Verizon Center will host the Washington Mystics' Opening Day Block Party to kick off the season. 
  • An Afghan Children's Songbook performance will take place at the National Gallery of Art at 4 pm coinciding with the grand opening of the exhibition, Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul. 
  • At 8 pm, catch the National Symphony Orchestra’s free Memorial Day concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.

Monday, May 26:

  • A wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the Air Force Memorial starting at 9 am.  A keynote speach will be given by Chief Master Sargeant of the Air Force, Rodney J. McKinley.
  • At 11 am and 1:30 pm, wreath-laying ceremonies will take place at the U.S. Navy Memorial, followed by the Navy Band concert at 12:30 pm.
  • A Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony and concert will be held at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery at 11 am.
  • A Presentation of the Colors and wreath-laying service will take place at 1 pm at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to honor those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • The National Memorial Day Parade will march down Constitution Ave. starting on 5th St. NW at 2 pm.

Saturday, May 30:

  • The 140th annual Grand Army of the Republic Decoration Day Service begins at 5 pm, starting at the Old Amphitheater next to Arlington House in Arlington National Cemetery, then progresses to the Tomb of the Unknowns.
