ARENA STAGE
The first theatre outside of New York to take home a Tony Award, Arena Stage showcases the works of established and emerging American playwrights under the artistic direction of the talented Molly Smith. Check the website for special “Out at Arena” performances, which include a post-show reception and discussion with the cast.
SIGNATURE THEATRE
Across the river in Arlington is Signature Theatre, located in the Shirlington neighborhood. Don’t let the suburban address fool you; Signature has presented dozens of world premieres since its founding in 1991. It has also been nominated for hundreds of Helen Hayes Awards and has claimed more than 50, including eight for 2005’s production of Urinetown alone. Signature offers Pride Night subscription packages, inviting its GLBT patrons to join in a complementary post-show cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception on select Friday and Sunday nights.
THEATRE J
At Theatre J, you can also take part in Cosmo & Conversation Playdate, a post-performance soiree for GLBT patrons after select Thursday night performances. If the Cosmo & Conversation schedule doesn’t mesh with your own, the company offers other Thursday Playdates that cater to 20 and 30-somethings and other interested patrons who want to meet the cast and discuss the show. Single ticket performances are $15 to $50.
OUT @ THE OPERA
Register for Washington National Opera’s "Out @ the Opera" mailing list and you’ll receive invitations to pre- and post-show receptions, backstage tours and meetings with artists.
Of course, there are also amateurs among us that also know how to put on a good show. The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC shows off the talents of more than 225 vocalists in four annual concerts. DC’s Different Drummers focuses on the instrumental side, presenting symphonic, swing and even marching band performances throughout the year. Dance enthusiasts should check out the hunky DC Cowboys, whose monthly Friday night Hoedown performances at Remington’s always pack crowds.
