Sept. 15 - Nov. 30, 2003

From landmark rulings at the Supreme Court to the syncopated sounds of U Street jazz, African-Americans have contributed to the history and culture of the nation’s capital. As we mark the 40th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I Have a Dream” speech this year, we invite you to join us for Blues & Dreams: Celebrating the African-American Experience in Washington, DC. From September 15-November 30, Washington, DC’s museums, theatres, restaurants and hotels will honor the city’s African-American heritage through exhibitions, performances, special menu items and hotel packages.

Headlining the celebration are two highly-anticipated exhibitions: The Art of Romare Bearden at The National Gallery of Art (Sept. 14-Jan. 4) and The Textile Museum’s African-American Quilts from the Robert and Helen Cargo Collection (Oct. 3-Feb. 29). But these exhibitions just scratch the surface. Make Blues & Dreams part of your vacation experience with visits to world-class museums, theatres, festivals and family events – all featuring themed activities and displays that highlight the proud African-American traditions of our capital city.
